Lost & Foundry
History
Started in 1995 as a
hobby by the Steve Hoerner "Casting Cowboy", full time as of 2001.
After 22 years of foundry service covering the 4 foundry areas. Pattern shop,
molding, melting/pouring and finishing. Initially started to make castings for
others and gradually worked toward making a "complete foundry
package" available for everyone.
I got a job in a foundry
when I was 15. When the rest of the kids my age were taking on the cross-town
football rivals, I was taking on 15 tons of molten iron. I had to learn foundry
the hard way, on the end of a shovel or wheelbarrow. Moving weights that were
50lbs each in each hand from molds that have been poured, to ones that haven't.
We had to cover the open faced molds after they were filled with molten iron,
my leather gloves would brown like toast. Unloading a semi-truck full of 100lb
sacks of sand, when I weighed only 130 myself! Every foundry I have worked
there seemed to be an older journeyman who would take me aside and teach me
things that were not written in any book. As the foundries were automated, the
journeymen have all but disappeared.
